Katie Chaplin and Japanese textiles

23 06 2015

Members enjoyed a fascinating talk by Katie on Japanese textiles.  This was a topic that I thought I knew about but Katie’s talk was full of fascinating information gleaned on her visits to Japan.  She showed us lots of kimonos and jackets as well as obi and best of all we enjoyed touching and wearing some of the items.  Anne looked particularly good in this orange wedding kimono.

The following day members and the young quilters enjoyed a lovely morning of hand sewing a rice bag.  Our packs contained enough fabric and thread to make 2 bags, one on the day and one at home.  We also made fabric brooches.  It was great to complete a project that was simple but satisfying in the morning before lunch (wonderful puddings again!).  Gemma really enjoyed it despite the intense concentration!

Meeting with Deborah O’Hare

23 06 2015

I was really looking forward to meeting Deborah and her talk ‘Tales from my Scrap bag’ was fun and inspiring.

She showed us some stunning pieces of work including the quilted picture of a barn, some hand stitching on a pieced block and a lovely book cover.  She brought with her, kits and patterns as well as some glorious hand painted fabric and a significant amount of shopping took place!  We look forward to booking the workshop to learn to paint our own landscape fabric next year.
