January 2014 Meeting with Ineke Berlyn – A to Z of Creative Quilting

9 01 2014

What a great quilter Ineke Berlyn is!  At our first meeting of the year, she gave a talk entitled ‘the A to Z of Creative quilting’  It was a fascinating talk that shared ideas and allowed us to enjoy looking at and touching many of Ineke’s quilted pieces.  These ranged from bags, landscapes, journal quilts and dress form quilts to a traditional bed  quilt.  For G, Ineke talked about Giving and described quilters as great people for giving and sharing ideas, help and support  and of course fabric! She is right of course and in her own case, Ineke is one of the most generous quilters I have met .  I remember listening to her talk about her work at the Festival of Quilts.  The large room was packed and at the end Ineke invited us all to look at her work and especially to her sketchbooks and journals.  I remember being so impressed with how relaxed she was about all these enthusiastic ladies oohing and aahing over her work and touching everything.  She was so generous and giving and I have never forgotten that inspiring talk. We’re looking forward to doing her denim bag workshop soon. Below you can see the tulip quilt, the black magic dress and  a lovely wallhanging using ammonite thermofax screens and the real mother of the bride dress that Ineke made for herself.

We had a packed room for the meeting with a large turn out of members, lots of visitors and 8 new members.  There was a real buzz, much of it generated by the prospect of hearing Ineke but some no doubt by the friendliness of the group.  We were discussing Christmas, handing in our group quilt blocks, signing up for workshops and the Mevagissey weekend and enjoying tea, coffee and biscuits whilst chatting to our friends.  A really great evening all round and a brilliant start to 2014 for Brockhampton Quilters.
