Weekend with Di Wells in Mevegissey

5 11 2012

Thanks to Di Wells and Georgina, a group of BQ members enjoyed a wonderful weekend in Cornwall.  The shopping at Cowslip Workshops was irresistible to most of us and the lunch in the cafe was delicious. The company was fun with much laughter, no cross words and huge amounts of support, encouragement and concentration. The never ending cakes  (fruit, coffee and walnut, chocolate brownies to die for, welsh cakes and lemon drizzle) was luscious and the teaching was inspiring.  Even the weather allowed some walking and we were all very comfortable in the lovely accommodation at Brodrugan Barton.  None of us wanted to come home.

So what did we do?  Well, we made fabric from paper and wallpaper paste, we made fabric from chopped up fabric and thread, a bit of bondaweb and organza, we stitched painted brown paper onto scrim with a sheer topping and we crumpled up and then ironed tissue paper before stitching honesty cases onto it with a fine needle in the machine and quite a lot of teeth gritting!  Oh and we did do some patchwork when we learnt how to piece curved seams without pinning.  Even Margot found herself enjoying stitching painted brown paper onto scrim and she certainly didn’t anticipate that!

The pictures above are of Jeanette’s projects as she probably completed the most and laid her work out in an attractive way and of Di showing us how to do curved piecing without pins or tears.

You can see some photos (actually 100) of the weekend here:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/quiltingsusy/sets/72157631927606757/

So today, thanks to Di  I have found myself cutting up a rather attractive brown envelope that arived in the post, crumpling and then ironing a  lovely piece of white Boden tissue paper with circles, picking some beautiful autumn leaves from the garden to add to the ones I picked in the motorway service station car park on the way home and then ironing them between baking parchment to dry them.  Now I just need to wax them and I can stitch them onto the tissue paper or maybe brown paper.  My brain is buzzing with ideas!!

So thanks to Di, we won’t be able to throw away anything ever again including brown paper, envelopes, tea bags, bubble wrap and even parcel tape.

But seriously we owe huge thanks to Di, to Georgina and to each other for a brilliantly inspiring weekend.  And I owe special thanks to Sue G who looked after me all weekend, made sure I didn’t lift anything heavy or even bend down to a plug socket and drove me both ways with regular stops to ensure that my rather fragile back survived the trip.  It obviously worked because I have managed today with no pain killers after a week of regular doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol.

And finally, Maureen, we all missed you, hope you are soon better and look forward to you coming on the repeat trip next year!

It was a brilliant weekend, trying out new techniques and playing with fabric. An inspiring tutor, a little shopping, lovely food and good company, What more could you wish for-Maureen to have been there. Huge thanks to Di and Georgina for organising it.
